A webcam is perched just above the barn door. Everything else around Good Shepherd Turkey Ranch , though, is old-fashioned. Frank Reese, Jr., has raised standard-bred or "heritage" turkeys for more than 50 years.
"They're labor-intensive just because we still farm the old way," says Reese. "We still farm where the turkeys run free, they're actually out on pastures, they still breed naturally."
Reese's all-natural farming methods are a dying breed, but his biggest worry is his turkeys being the same way. These rare birds are the grandfathers of the modern, mass-produced turkeys.
Reese's turkeys have gained in popularity after winning several tasting contests. In 2001, he sold 900 of his birds. This year, he's already sold 9,000 and Christmas sales aren't finished yet.
