Frank Reese, Jr., got his first turkey at age 8, and just like that, he was hooked. Reese has 900 turkeys on his Good Shepherd Turkey Ranch, but a case of avian flu in just a single bird would devastate his life's work.
"We just have to prepare," says Reese, "and if it isn't avian influenza, it's going to be something else. There will always be something."
Reese's precautions include regular blood testing. Perhaps his most effective tool, though, is a divided flock. Reese has four other farmers raising his turkeys for bio-security.
"We can't risk having them all on one farm. If we had an outbreak...hopefully, the outbreak would be at one farm. Then, you can contain it."
