What Seraichick was referring to was a web camera with which the construction of Butler Court Residence hall can be viewed online. She said the camera was mounted on a corner of the Residential Life building roof, and is one of two the college has.
"KSC currently has two different models, Axis 2120 and Canon VB10 that were bought for us by the science and dinning construction projects," she said. "One has the option to pan with and the other doesn't."
"It's a common construction trade practice to document construction progress," Kahn said. "Also it is used by colleges and universities to communicate progress toward the completion of facilities."
St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. has a webcam link from their website showing the construction of a fire and rescue station, and the website for University of Massachusetts at Amherst has two webcam links viewing the construction of an undergraduate student apartment complex.
According to en.wikipedia.org a webcam operates in real-time (task happens before maximum delay allowed is reached) by capturing images people access on the Internet.
Kahn said another webcam was used to view the construction of the new Zorn Dining Commons, and it will be moved to the "end of Bruder Street to view the progress of Pondside 3."
College relations creates the web link, while network services handles the webcam and downloading of pictures to prevent the camera from filling up, she said.
Junior Megan Aronson did not know about the Butler Court webcam, and she doesn't see a point to it. However, she thinks pictures are a good idea for "parents and the community to see because they are dealing with the noise and money."
