A graphic online chat with a San Mateo County Sheriff’s detective who pretended to be a 12-year-old girl landed a federal immigration agent stationed in New Mexico behind bars on charges of soliciting a minor for sex.
Michael Aaron Walker, 43, was arrested Tuesday at a federal courthouse in New Mexico at the request of the Texas Attorney General’s Cyber Crimes Unit. Walker, an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was transferred to Albuquerque three weeks ago but lived and worked as an armed transport officer in Cameron County, Texas at the time of the alleged incidents in March.
Using the screen name “badboy_afterdark,” Walker reportedly told the sheriff’s detective his name was “Mike” after meeting in an online chat room. He told the detective he thought she was really 12 years old pretending to be 13 and set photos of his body parts, according to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office.
The detective contacted Texas authorities in June and the New Mexico Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children unit arrested him on charges of soliciting a minor online and attempted sexual performance by a child.
Investigators discovered Walker used a computer registered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the online chats, according to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office.
“What is especially disturbing to me is that Walker himself is a law enforcement officer, charged with protecting others and enforcing the laws of this country,” stated New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid in announcing the arrest.
