KINGSTON -- The 21-year-old man accused of blackmailing over 100 young girls in Canada and the United Kingdom into performing sexual acts online made a brief court appearance yesterday.
The bail hearing for Mark Gary Bedford was rescheduled because the defence hadn't received briefing documents on the case. He will appear in court by video from the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee on Thursday.
The slight, boyish-looking Bedford faces two counts of luring a child with a computer, two counts of possessing child pornography, three counts of making child pornography, two counts of distributing child pornography and three counts of extortion.
The alleged blackmailer preyed on girls through Internet chat groups and hacked into their contact lists, posing as their young friends, police said.
Using the anonymity of the Internet, the man would convince them to take off their clothes and commit sexual acts in front of a webcam. If they refused, police said the man would threaten them.
